Brazil-Lebanon South-South Cooperation in Key Sectors: The Way Forward in the World of Work

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has commended Brazil and Lebanon for their ongoing efforts to strengthen South-South and Triangular Cooperation, particularly in the context of Lebanon’s current multi-crisis challenges.

The ILO’s recent assessment report highlights the significant potential for expanding cooperation between the two countries, with a focus on inclusive and sustainable development. The report emphasizes that deeper collaboration between Brazil and Lebanon could play a crucial role in promoting economic recovery, creating decent work opportunities, and enhancing social resilience in Lebanon, especially amidst the ongoing economic crisis.

The ILO underscored that South-South Cooperation serves as an essential tool for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly during times of crisis. It offers a unique opportunity to build more inclusive economies that benefit all sectors of society. By enhancing cooperation, both Brazil and Lebanon can generate long-term growth while addressing the urgent socio-economic needs of their populations.

The report reviews past and current initiatives between Brazil and Lebanon, and outlines a strategy for expanding and deepening their collaboration. It calls for a more strategic, long-term approach to cooperation that incorporates multi-sectoral engagement and ensures the active participation of all relevant stakeholders, including governments, employers, workers, and civil society.

Among the key recommendations is the expansion of cooperation in critical infrastructure development, as well as in the sustainable agri-food systems and tourism sectors. These areas are seen as vital drivers of job creation and economic revitalization in Lebanon. Additionally, leveraging Brazil’s strengths in technology, renewable energy, and financial services presents new opportunities for partnership and mutual growth.

The ILO also highlighted the importance of engaging the Lebanese diaspora in Brazil, which can play a key role in fostering knowledge exchange, investment, and business partnerships. This engagement could significantly contribute to the resilience and recovery of both nations.

The ILO stressed the need for a steady, long-term commitment to South-South Cooperation between Brazil and Lebanon, focusing on enhancing economic ties, fostering mutual learning, and promoting a just transition for workers in both countries.

As Lebanon continues to confront its economic challenges, the ILO emphasized the importance of partnerships that not only address immediate needs but also lay the foundation for sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economies for the future.
