The ILO Regional Office for Arab States advanced South-South and triangular cooperation in the region through two complementary initiatives that strengthened climate governance, care policies, and decent work systems. Through its regional just transition initiative, the ILO supported Arab countries in integrating social and employment dimensions into their climate commitments, training officials from across the region, building peer-learning networks, and launching collaborative frameworks that improved the capacity of labour, environment, employers’ and workers’ institutions to shape more inclusive Nationally Determined Contributions. In parallel, the South4Care platform brought together policymakers and practitioners from the Arab States and partner countries worldwide to deepen their understanding of the care economy, enhance protection for paid care workers—especially migrant domestic workers—and promote gender-responsive policies aligned with the 5R Framework. By combining virtual and in-person exchanges, technical tracks, and multilingual peer learning, the initiative strengthened national care systems, inspired legislative follow-up, expanded interregional partnerships, and positioned the Arab States region as an active contributor to global dialogues on decent work, climate action, and social justice. Together, these efforts demonstrated the value of sustained regional cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and solidarity in shaping forward-looking labour and social policies.
