Brasília Hosts the 4th BRICS Employment Working Group Meeting Focused on Artificial Intelligence and Just Transition

Brasília, Brazil (ILO News) – From April 22 to 23, 2025, – representatives from BRICS countries, international organizations, and key stakeholders gathered in Brasília for the 4th BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) Meeting, under Brazil’s presidency. The discussions centered on two crucial themes for the future of work: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Just Transition.

The meeting was opened by the Minister of Labour Luiz Marinho and Kamal Gueye from the ILO made a technical presentation on Just Transition in the world of work. This happenes simultaneously with the ILO’s South-South BRICS emerging technologies meeting , that discuss at the academic level the same topics with a focus on a just transition.

The EWG is currently chaired by Maira Lacerda, Senior Advisor at the Brazilian Ministry of Labour and Employment. Under her leadership, the meeting provided a platform for BRICS countries to exchange experiences and policy strategies to address the challenges and opportunities posed by digital and green transitions in the world of work.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

Delegates discussed the rapid advancement of AI and its impact on job creation, skills transformation, and worker protection. Emphasis was placed on the need for people-centered AI governance, ethical frameworks, and the active participation of social partners to ensure the digital transition fosters decent work and social inclusion.

Just Transition Towards Sustainable Economies

The meeting also focused on ensuring that the transition to more sustainable economies is inclusive, equitable, and grounded in decent work principles. Country experiences highlighted investments in green jobs, reskilling programs, and the strengthening of social protection systems to support workers, enterprises, and communities in adapting to climate change and environmental policies.
The meeting reaffirmed the BRICS commitment to aligning technological innovation and climate action with social justice and sustainable development.

ILO Participation

The International Labour Organization (ILO) was represented by Diana Chavez, Vinicius Pinheiro, Kamal Gueye, and Anita Amorim, who contributed to the discussions with global perspectives and technical expertise on inclusive labor market strategies.

The outcomes of the Brasília meeting will contribute to the ongoing dialogue and cooperation within BRICS, reinforcing a shared agenda for a fair, inclusive, and sustainable future of work, where women and men worldwide can support these advances through South- South and triangular cooperation.
