Training Program on Just Transition and Climate Policy Development through the Nationally Determined Contributions in Arab States, 15 January 2024
The first day of the training on the Foundations of Just Transition and South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) was marked by a structured progression aimed at exploring the links between climate action and social equity.
The session was introduced by Linda Deelen from the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO), followed by a presentation by Amera Al-Adba from the ILO’s ESPU. Their introductions laid the conceptual and logistical foundations of the program, notably highlighting the role of SSTC in supporting just transition as a catalyst for collective solutions through resource sharing and peer learning.
The remainder of the session was facilitated by Mette G. Lund from the ILO Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS). Through her intervention, she enabled participants from government entities, international organizations, labour unions, civil society, and the research community to understand the impacts of climate change on decent work. The focus was placed on the interdependence between environmental sustainability and economic equity. Participants explored how climate adaptation and mitigation strategies can generate green jobs and foster social inclusion. A part of this session provided concrete examples to illustrate these dynamics.
Building on the concepts introduced to deepen the role of SSTC in collective climate action, this thematic continuity allowed participants to strengthen their understanding of potential synergies between regional cooperation and just transition.
Thus, this first day laid a solid foundation for a comprehensive understanding of just transition and the strategic role of SSTC in promoting inclusive and equitable climate action.
